In the summer of 1881 the English artist Lefevre James Cranstone (1822-1893) who received his art training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in London visited the Isle of Wight, England. During this visit he created a series of thirty eight watercolor paintings of local holiday areas. After almost a hundred and thirty years the existence of these paintings was discovered recently by Williamsburg art historian Donald Smith, Cranstone's biographer.
